"Controversy" is a consistently good album - less commercial than "Prince" and a little less raucous than "Dirty Mind," very funk-rooted with new wave influences, a bit of rock 'n' roll, soul and pop, and of course the unexpectedly fresh genius of this one-man band from Minneapolis. Particular standouts are the title track (a thought-provoking lyric - an integrated "Our Father" and a pretty striking punk vocal, plus a swinging rhythm and a gorgeous chorus), the hyper-erotic ballad "Do Me, Baby" and "Annie Christian," a truly brilliant piece of music with an eye to the future. There's a bit of government criticism (uncharacteristic of Prince's albums) and party music at the intersection of funk and rock 'n' roll. The pinnacle of Prince's early creative period. Prince as we know him for the first time. Supercool or heavily hyped, overwrought and plagued by his own lust. He was never a relaxed storyteller.
