It was recorded at Abbey Road studios in London. It was the first Pink Floyd album to reach number one in the UK charts. This album was a commercial success upon release, but members of the band, notably Roger Waters and David Gilmour, had several negative opinions of it. The cover artwork was designed by Hipgnosis and was the first Pink Floyd album not to feature the band's name or a photograph of the band.
