This performance became legendary not only for the first recording of the civil rights song "To Be Young, Gifted And Black". Black Gold" also features a version of Sandy Denny's "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" in a minimal arrangement, resulting in a spectacular orchestration that is tailor-made for the song and the singer. While Simone maintains a sometimes goofy, sometimes majestically distant demeanor throughout the performance, she increasingly draws the audience to her side during the interlude monologues. Her eclectic style features a variety of musical forms between soul, gospel, folk, jazz and Broadway, while her unique voice color oscillates between melancholy and bliss. "Black Gold" is an insightful album from the peak of her career that should not be overlooked.
