New Order's Movement, released in 1981, is often cited as the band's debut album. Although the band had released several singles and EPs prior to Movement, this album is considered the first time the band's sound coalesced into the post-punk/new wave style for which it has become known. The album was produced by Martin Hannett, who also produced Joy Division's last album, Closer. The album's sound is often dark and brooding, with heavy bass lines and synths. The lyrics, written primarily by Bernard Sumner, often deal with themes of love and loss. The album's lead single, "Dreams Never End", was a Top 10 hit in the UK. The album has been cited as an influence by a number of bands, including The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead and Muse.
