So much has been said and written about Miles Davis' "Kind Of Blue" that it is virtually impossible to summarize all the necessary information in the scope of these essays. We could simply state a few facts (the best-selling jazz album of all time in the world). We could try to explain why it is the best jazz album of all time, but the music will do that for you. As Bill Evans stated in the original liner notes, the band did not play any of these songs before recording. Miles Davis wrote the themes before the tape was recorded, and the band improvised. The end result was fragile and strange. Recorded in two sessions in 1959, Kind of Blue works on many different levels and will continue to do so for many years to come. review: "The residue of inexplicability still remains because it took the six musicians only two sessions to record these five songs. A few words between takes and photographs by Don Hunstein are documented. Miles was aiming for a "middle register," exemplified by "So What," a pure tone. The record is a compendium of idioms such as blues, flamenco and ballad, which are intertwined here. Nothing was "composed", at most barely notated or announced." (rollingstone. de) "For the musicians who recorded it, Kind of Blue was just another recording when it came out in August 1959. The jazz community, however, quickly recognized the record as a classic. Jazz musicians were surprised by the album's genuinely different sound, which clearly paved the way for further modal exploration." (npr. org) "The music is at once romantic, austere, meditative, introverted and soulful. It is like an essay on the virtue of simplicity." (LA Times) "Kind of Blue presents an elegantly simple and stunningly beautiful new approach to jazz improvisation." (jazz. about. com) ""Kind of Blue" is widely considered the first modal jazz-based album, laying the foundation for much of the jazz of the 1960s and 1970s, the jazz revival of the 1990s, and heralding the free jazz movement. By bringing modal forms to a wider audience, it also influenced the development of rock and world music. This reputation is great and well deserved. "Kind of Blue" is, in short, one of those epochal albums that continues to grow in importance." (100greatestjazzalbums. blogspot. com)
