Load is the sixth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica , released on June 4, 1996 by Elektra Records. The album was Metallica's first release on Elektra after switching from their longtime label Warner Bros. Records. Load debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 680,000 copies in its first week. The album spawned five singles that reached the Billboard Hot 100, including the #1 hits "Until It Sleeps" and "The Unforgiven II". The album marked a change in the band's sound from the thrash metal of previous albums to harder rock. Metallica spent nearly two years touring in support of Load, playing more than 1,700 shows in 31 countries. In 2003, the album was ranked 368th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Music critics gave Load mixed reviews. Some praised the album for its musical diversity and innovative sound, while others criticized it for being unoriginal and derivative. In August 1996, the album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and has since sold more than six million copies worldwide.
