The album spent 83 weeks at number six on the Billboard 200 chart, sold over 8 million copies, was certified eight times platinum and was the band's best-selling album to date. The fourth album was the first to feature new bassist Jason Newsted since Cliff Burton's death in 1986. The album contains long, complex songs whose lyrics deal with political and legal injustices viewed through such lenses as censorship, war and nuclear issues. The album cover artwork was designed by Stephen Gorman, who bounced off designs by guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich.
