With the second and eighth albums, famous live recordings were made in London and Stockholm. Furtwängler's mature late Ninth Symphony is legendary: the work, which he personally regarded as his shrine, was performed in 1951 at the reopening of the Bayreuth Festival Theatre after the Second World War. Performed with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Elisabeth Höngen, Hans Hopf and Otto Edelmann, it made one of the most important recordings of the work ever - and now forms a major cycle on vinyl LP with other Furtwängler Beethoven documents.
