Music by one of the most important composers of all time Ludwig van Beethoven is one of the most important composers of classical music (along with his predecessors Bach, Mozart and Haydn). He became a myth during his lifetime and produced a number of works that belong to the core of the genre - most notably his symphonies (the Fifth with its famous opening hammer motif, or the Ninth with its 'Ode to Joy', the melody of which is now the EU anthem), as well as the thrilling piano concertos, piano sonatas (the popular 'Moonlight Sonata', 'Appassionata' and 'Pathétique'), string quartets, violin sonatas, the opera 'Fidelio' and even the classic hit 'Für Elise'. At the age of 22, Beethoven moved from his native Bonn to the then centre of the musical world, Vienna, where he became a star as a composer, pianist and improviser. At the age of 30, the shock of his life came: Beethoven gradually lost his hearing. The struggle with this fate was to define his life and work from then on. Many of his greatest works were heard only in his imagination. He never heard them. Beethoven ushered in a whole new era of musical performance. While his predecessors like Haydn and Mozart created for an audience whose wishes inspired them to create masterpieces, for Beethoven only one thing mattered: his own artistic will. The composer thus became the first representative of the uncompromising, often misunderstood modern type of artist that became the ideal in the subsequent Romantic era and in the 20th century. In this spirit, Beethoven transcended all boundaries: formally, harmonically and stylistically. He even anticipated jazz in his Piano Sonata No. 32. Here we hear boogie-woogie in a rhythmically exuberant variation.
