He was born on 25 November 1895 in Jüterborg and grew up in Potsdam, where his father was organist and royal music director. His worldwide fame and the admiration of colleagues such as Alfred Brendel and the composer Jean Sibelius were based on the lyrical and spontaneous qualities of his playing and his extensive repertoire of works by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt and Brahms. Kempff, however, is most famous for his interpretations of the music of Franz Schubert and Ludwig van Beethoven, and this exclusive box presents complete recordings of his Beethoven sonatas, including, of course, the legendary "Moonlight Sonata" and "Hammerklavier".
