The Italian Carlo Maria Giulini conducted the Vienna Philharmonic from 1973 to 1976 as successor to Josef Krips and made a number of important recordings with them. The musician, who had long specialised in symphonic concertos, concentrated mainly on works by Bruckner, Mahler and Brahms. For the recording of Beethoven's piano concertos, he collaborated with the Italian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, who usually travelled to concerts with his own piano, a piano from the house of Tallone, as well as with the piano technician Angelo Fabbrini. Michelangeli made his debut in 1946 and later taught Maurizio Pollini and Martha Argerich, among others. This title is SHM SACD. This format is a further development of the single-layer SACD and uses a particularly lightweight transparent plastic (Super High Material). This makes it possible to read the structures of the wells on the surface much better than is possible with hybrid SACDs. Universal's SHM SACDs are usually redigitized in DSD from album master tapes without any changes. SHM SACDs can be played on any SACD player.
