"It contains every element of human life - humour, seriousness, grace, dance," is how pianist David Fray describes the masterpiece of Baroque variation art: the Goldberg Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Frenchman is now playing them in a small Pyrenean chapel near his birthplace. That David Fray was drawn to perform the work in the place of his childhood is due to the particular spatial setting of the chapel, but also to the piece itself. The pianist explains, "When you play the theme again after thirty variations, it's as if you've reached the end of your life and look back on it." Bach himself called his Goldberg Variations "changes". They build on each other and build up to the last ridiculously virtuosic piano pieces, until the original theme returns at the end - and yet they feel very different from the beginning. David Fray calls it "a sense of eternity". This may be the impression Bach intended when he composed the piece; after all, he wrote the variations to cheer his patron through sleepless nights. Bach's pupil, the eponymous Goldberg, then played the pieces for him as needed. The old master Johann Sebastian Bach is of great importance in David Fry's discography. The BBC Music Magazine praises Fray's playing as 'finely tuned, the technical execution is aristocratically balanced and produces colours of irresistibly transparent light and shade'.
