Goldberg's variations represent a musical cosmos whose compositional diversity opens up unsuspected musical and aesthetic horizons. This recording tries to follow mainly melodic lines. Tonal developments, polyphonic textures and lyrical moods are at the forefront. Goldberg's Variations are anchored in the sound world of the Baroque, but they go far beyond that era and gradually anticipate the aesthetic level of later piano cycles: Beethoven's Diabelli Variations, Brahms' Handel Variations or Reger's Bach Variations. Alfred Stenger studied philosophy in Frankfurt with Theodor W. Adorno and musicology with Winfried Kirsch. After graduating in conducting he was engaged in various theatres. Since 1992, Alfred Stenger has been teaching score playing at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe and musicology and opera accompaniment at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt. From 2009-2012 he also taught at the Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT in Weimar as a lecturer in score playing.
