Already the first printed editions of Bach's incomparable "Goldberg Variations" contained arrangements for ensembles of melodic instruments. The reason for this is obvious: Bach's complex set of parts is not so easily realised on the piano and is difficult for the listener to understand. The Aulos Quartet has recorded a new version of Rheinberger's version that impresses in several ways: the mixed scoring of strings and winds ensures ideal clarity, and the oboe profonda uses a rarely heard instrument that enormously expands the tonal possibilities of the oboe family.
