It was the first album to feature guitarist Michael Weikath and drummer Ingo Schwichtenberg, who later became permanent members of the band. The album also featured the first appearance of vocalist Michael Kiske, who remained with the band until 1993.The album's lyrics are based on the story of a young man who is sent to the underworld to rescue the seven keys that keep the gates of hell closed. The album's title track is a seven-minute epic that tells the story of a young man's journey to the underworld.
