FRANCOISE HARDY had a strict upbringing by her mother. She remembers being "very, very shy". The records and Radio Luxembourg provided an escape and inspiration. She loved the French chanson of EDITH PIAF and CHARLES AZNAVOUR, but also the rock'n'roll of the EVERLY BROTHERS. Instead of her planned study of political science at the Sorbonne, she decided to pursue a career as a singer, auditioned for several labels and eventually landed a job with Johnny Hallyday's Disques Voque, who wanted to sell FRANCOISE as a rocker, which is evident in the first single "Oh Oh Chéri". However, FRANCOISE had other plans and wanted to record her own songs in French. The huge success of her own song "Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles" proved her right. DYLAN wrote a poem about her, had dinner with STONES and BEATLES and insisted on creative control over her work. HARDY stood out as an introspective outsider, half pop singer, half chansonnier. To this day, she is still associated with utter French cool.
