The plot of the drama Peer Gynt is originally based on Norwegian fairy tales that were reworked into dramatic poems by Henrik Ibsen. He commissioned Edvard Grieg to write the accompanying music, which premiered in Christiania in 1876. Finally, in 1888 and 1891 Grieg published two suites, Peer Gynt, composed of incidental music, which have since become some of his best-known works.
