"Black, Brown, & Beige" is Duke Ellington's musical presentation of the African American experience in the United States. It may be the master's greatest work. The triumph of telling such an important story in such an extraordinary way using only musical means makes "Black, Brown & Beige" Duke Ellington's masterpiece. It also offers the ultimate performance of Ellington - and jazz - at its most detailed. Whether one views this opus as a three-movement symphony or follows Ellington's personal terminology, namely "tonal parallelism," "Black, Brown & Beige" fits in concept and content with the musical continuity of the greatest names in Western classical music in their longest works. The story of Black, Brown & Beige is significant in its own right. The premiere at Carnegie Hall on January 23, 1943 was also Ellington's first performance in that famous house. The master created (after the fact) the "Come Sunday Suite". Duke Ellington essentially reduced the three-movement piece to the first, "Black", and elevated the spiritual theme of that movement, "Come Sunday", to the leitmotif of the piece. The reduction of the "Black, Brown, & Beige" symphony to the song "Come Sunday" is complete because Duke Ellington expanded it to include numerous themes and variations not in the original. And best of all is the sacred lyrics, written by Ellington himself and sung by the most famous African-American gospel singer in history, Mahalia Jackson. There is no doubt that, thanks to Mahalia Jackson's presence and artistry, this arrangement of "Black, Brown & Beige" has a place in the pantheon where the work already resides in its original form. Duke Ellington achieved this coup without being able to use the resources otherwise at his disposal, especially his right hand. Overlooked in the years since the recording of "Black, Brown, & Beige" in February 1958 was the absence of Johnny Hodges (who was touring with Strayhorn in Florida at the time), the first soloist in Ellington's band...
