Never Let Me Down is the seventeenth studio album by English singer David Bowie , released on 20 April 1987 by EMI Records. It was his last album under contract with the label. Bowie wrote and recorded the album in Switzerland with producer Tony Visconti and a group of session musicians. He described the album as "his most complete work" and its sound as "a very dry, sparse production". The album was not received positively upon its release by critics, who felt that its hard rock sound was at odds with Bowie's previous work. In recent years, however, it has been re-evaluated as an underrated work. The lead single "Day-In, Day-Out" reached the UK top ten and the album was awarded a silver certificate by the British Phonographic Industry. Never Let Me Down is generally a hard rock album. The sound of the album has been compared to that of Iggy Pop's The Idiot, which was also produced by Visconti. Rolling Stone magazine described the album as "a hard rock affair with a heavy metal edge". AllMusic described the album as "featuring a thick, distorted guitar sound and one of the most aggressive vocals of Bowie's career".
