Trying to get a worldwide consensus on the "best song of all time" is surely doomed to failure. But the fact is that Bob Dylan wrote one of pop's most influential songs, "Like A Rolling Stone". It has been sung by artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Green Day, Cher, Michael Bolton, David Bowie and, of course, the Rolling Stones, and one music journalist devoted an entire book to it. The six-minute anthem, about a young woman from a good family with a dislike of homelessness who ends up on the streets alone, challenged every rule for songs suitable for radio up to that point, not only in its length but also in its concern and anger. With "Highway 61 Revisited," Dylan's transformation from folk musician to rock musician is considered complete. Like the eponymous highway between northern Minnesota and the Mississippi Delta, the 1965 album combines folk (Desolation Row), blues (It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry) and rock (Tombstone Blues, From a Buick 6, Highway 61 Revisited). "Highway 61 Revisited" is proof that rock 'n roll doesn't have to be academic and innocuous to be erudite, poetic and complex. Dylan's LP number six is a treasure for fans who can't get enough of anthems like "Like A Rolling Stone," "Ballad Of A Thin Man," "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" and "Highway 61 Revisited." But that's not all: the master is accompanied by Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield and Charlie McCoy, among others.
