Recorded in 1961 but not released until 1967, The Witch Doctor features one of the best line-ups of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers ever: Wayne Shorter on tenor sax, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Bobby Timmons on piano and Jymie Merritt on bass. Shorter and Morgan contributed two songs each, while Timmons wrote one. Highlights include Morgan's magnificent 6/8 modal piece "Afrique" and Shorter's minor masterpiece "Those Who Sit And Wait." Bobby Timmons offers deep soul on "A Little Busy" and the album closes with Clifford Jordan's light-hearted "Lost and Found". Blue Note Tone Poet Series The Blue Note Tone Poet Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Wase's admiration for the exceptional audiophile reissues of Blue Note LPs released by Music Matters. Joe Harley (of Music Matters), known as the "Tone Poet," curated and oversaw the series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels. In the preparation of these reissues, extraordinary attention to detail was paid in every conceivable respect, from the packaging and print quality, to the superb mastering of the LPs (directly from the master tapes) by Kevin Gray, to the excellent audiophile-grade 180gm LP pressings by Record Technology Inc. The Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue series from Blue Note Records is produced by Joe Harley and features fully analog 180gm audiophile vinyl reissues from the original master tape in deluxe gatefold packaging. Mastering was done by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) and the vinyl was produced by Record Technology Incorporated (RTI).
